The work pertaining to the project was accomplished primarily with either open source software or shareware. The operating system of choice was Linux (Fedora core 1 and Fedora Core 5). In some cases Windows XP was also used.
The programs used were as follows:
(i)For numerical calculations: The Intel fortran compiler for linux with or without the use of the built in OPENMP parallel processing capability and the gnu fortran compiler
(ii) For data analysis and plotting: Primarily opensource: gnuplot and its embedded utility: pm3d.
(iii) For image manipulation: Again primarily opensource: gimp, Kcolor, Xfig in linux; paint, Serif, Irfan view etc which are either freeware or shareware.
(iv) For animations: gimp and Serif.
(v) For java applets: Sun java compiler (java.sun.com).
(vi) For recording sounds: built in sound recorder in windows.
(vii For text editing: vi, gedit, kwrite in linux and notepad in windows.
(viiii) For word processing and typesetting.: predominantly Latex (more specifically pdftex that comes with Fedora linux distribution and the free Miktex frontend to Latex in windows)) as well as openoffice text in linux and windows.
(ix) For creating and viewing pdf documents: Export utility in openoffice for creating pdf and kpdf, acroread (in Linux) and Acrobat Reader in Windows.
(x) And finally for creating the web-pages: Primarily latex2html but also used raw html, Mozilla composer and free web designing tools available on the web.
All the above work was accomplished with a Celeron as well as a Pentium 4 processor with 256MB and 1GB of RAM respectively.
Besides help was taken from the web as also from many a good book on the respective subjects.
